The historie of foure-footed beastes is a wonderful bestiary, published in , describing both real and fantastic creatures, all illustrated in detailed woodcuts.
The book includes familiar animals such as the cat, horse and hedgehog, but also the fantastic, including the Unicorn and the Manticore. The title page shows a grazing Gorgo, depicted as a scaly pig with a shaggy head of hair.

Edward Topsell was a Church of England clergyman, born in Kent in He wrote several books but is most famous for this one. It was followed in by The history of serpents and the two books were combined in as The history of four-footed beasts, serpents and insects. His aim was not just to inform and entertain, but to share his belief that the natural world as arranged by God provided an instructive guide which people could study to draw lessons for their own lives.
